About The Order Beneath

The films and plates here take mathematics as their subject. The films are narrated just enough for you to follow what is happening on screen. You need not come away having learned anything, but you may well come away having seen something you had never noticed.

Under the surface of things lies a mathematical order, and this series sets out to make it visible. Each volume explores one area of mathematics, and every frame is drawn live in your browser. Invariant, the prologue, is a film; the films and plates of Conformal, Spectral, Implicit, Flow and Arithmetic are now available, and the other volumes are still in production.

What a volume holds

Each volume takes up one area of mathematics: a short film and a handful of plates that loop seamlessly, about a minute per cycle (the prologue, Invariant, is a film alone). Tools you can handle yourself live in the Studio, starting with Walking a group.

How it is made

Each language version is written in that language, not translated from another: the lines follow what each moment has to say, and the pictures are timed to the narration. The same code draws the film here, the videos on each platform, and the tools in the Studio.

Languages

The interface is in English, Japanese and Chinese. The prologue, Invariant, and the first volume, Conformal, have versions in all three; from the second volume on there are Chinese and English versions, and the Japanese interface plays the English one.

Where to watch

Here every frame is drawn live in your browser, and you can pause at any moment. Videos recorded by the same code are on Bilibili in Chinese and on YouTube in English.
